Experience the intricacy, beauty and complexity of the world around us through microscopy at the ASCUS Lab. This jam-packed 2-day microscope course is designed to enable participants to have a full understanding of microscopy.
At the end of the course you will understand how various microscopes work and troubleshoot issues that may arise, how to prepare various samples including dust, plants, fungi, bacteria, soil and water, tips and tricks to search and identify specimens, a variety of staining and illumination techniques and image capturing for independent personal, creative or scientific applications.
Whether you have a project in mind, or just want to experience the wonder and magic of the unseen world for yourself, this microscopy course is for everyone, no previous experience is required.
All participants should bring along a notebook, all other materials are provided. You are welcome to bring your own DSLR cameras and/or SD cards, however we have some cameras available and will send you images after the workshop.

Sample collection and preparation– what to consider for various samples
Slide preparation – fixing and mounting
Optimised illumination techniques and imaging

Staining methods, techniques and applications – an expansive world
Contrast enhancing techniques – adjusting the light path
Different types of microscopes

Intro to Oil immersion technique – as close up as you can get
Applying all the techniques learnt
