ASCUS Art & Science is excited to be hosting multiple workshops throughout The Festival of Creative Learning as we invite you to our open lab where you can learn about the microscopic world around you and the impact it has on everyday life! The Festival of Creative Learning is a year-long festival focusing on creative learning and innovation at the University of Edinburgh, culminating in a curated programme of events every February.
Window into the EarthThe History inside Crystals3:00-5:30 & 6:30-9:00pm, Thursday 22nd Feb 2018Are you interested in investigating the varied environments of the earth through the many types of crystals they produce? By observing through a microscope, you can compare and see how different crystals and textures from all over the world are generated and altered. At the end of the session you will be well versed in looking a rock sections under the microscope and be able to detect where a sample originated from and what has happened to it during its journey to reach you. You will also have the opportunity to grow your own crystals, observing them under the microscope and competing to be the first to discover what happened to our mystery crystal section (hint: it’s been on quite a journey!).Check out what else is happening in ASCUS lab during this years Festival of Creative Learning Week where we have a a range of workshops that explore the small and hidden world around us![divider]
About the researcher

[/one_fourth][three_fourth_last]Sam Marchbank is a fourth-year student from Edinburgh University interested in Geochemistry and Crystallography. His work focuses on the genesis of hybridised rocks, and using geochemical analysis to trace their evolution. He is also interested in art and how art and science can be used together, and is excited to work with ASCUS labs to show people how interesting crystallography can be.[/three_fourth_last][divider]
